Enduring luxury: The sustainable appeal of the pewter

December 30, 2025

For Royal Selangor, luxury and sustainability aren’t mutually exclusive. Together, they give pewter that desirable heirloom quality.

Pewter products at Royal Selangor are made to last. They are designed and hand-crafted to the highest standard for that luxury and heirloom quality. This underpins the pewter manufacturer’s design philosophy: luxury products are meant to be circulated, passed down the generations or from one collector to the next.

Sustainability and circularity are addressed on a daily basis in the design studio, on the factory floor and at the travel retail outlets. To innovate and improve the production processes, Royal Selangor looks to their pewtersmithing heritage and the latest technology.

Responsible design

Recent lines such as coasters, travel caddies and photoframes utilise eco-composite material that combines resin with sawdust from the company’s wood workshop. The wood workshop creates wood frames, bases and boxes. It also sustainably sources its wood from forests certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, or PEFC.

By 2023, Royal Selangor has achieved an 80% ratio of biodegradable or recyclable material in its overall purchases. Moreover, 58% of its active items are free from non-biodegradable content, a jump from 0% in March 2022 (source: Royal Selangor Sustainability Report 2024, pg. 22).

The pewter itself, a 100% recyclable alloy, ensures that nothing goes to waste. Scraps, prototypes and discontinued items are routinely melted down and reused.

Biodegradable packaging

Packaging is part and parcel of the Royal Selangor commercial objective. For customers and handlers, the box is an important physical touchpoint that also adds to the retail experience. Up to 2019, all Royal Selangor products were presented in luxurious but rigid boxes protected by foam. The feedback received from customers and retail outlets was that the packaging was hard to flatpack once unboxed.

The design was therefore improved on. First, the outer box was updated using single colour printing. Next, the inner box was updated by swapping the foam and cardboard liners with honeycomb sleeves. By doing so, it’s estimated that the company saves 600 kg a year on foam that’s destined for landfill. Today, most Royal Selangor items come in kraft boxes. The foam has largely been replaced with sleeves that are biodegradable.

Sound and vision

Technology is important in advancing the artistic value and quality of Royal Selangor’s products. It goes hand-in-hand with the manual craftsmanship. The company uses 3D printing and scanning technology that helps reduce prototyping and mould-making time.

The latest technology also helps in innovating products such as the Phonos amplifier. It’s a pewter-and-wood amplifier that works without batteries or cords, harnessing acoustic science to naturally amplify sound.

Powering for the future

Since 2019, nearly 3,000 solar panels at the Royal Selangor headquarters at Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, have been generating renewable energy, powering daily operations and feeding excess energy back into the national grid. All diesel cauldrons have been replaced with electric ones. For international ecommerce shipping, Royal Selangor partners with DHL GoGreen Plus, an initiative that helps the company measure and reduce carbon emissions through the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

Wild about nature

In June 2025, Royal Selangor celebrated its first Eco Week event with two weeks of sustainability-focused activities. Running from 13 to 29 June 2025, the event showcased Royal Selangor’s sustainability initiatives, such as responsible material use and sustainable design, as well as family workshops. Amongst the collections highlighted were Sculptura and Earth, which raise awareness of species on the brink of extinction, as well as tea caddies and coasters incorporating composite eco-materials. Eco Week reflected Royal Selangor’s belief that craftsmanship and creativity can drive meaningful conversations around environmental stewardship.

Personal values, such as the quest for perfection that signal good taste and novelty, can conflate with social values such as circularity and sustainable endeavours. At Pavilion KL’s Royal Selangor outlet, you’d be able to witness luxury that is found in durability, heritage and timelessness.
