L’OCCITANE’s Commitments to Sustainability and Responsibility

December 22, 2025

Founded in 1976 in Provence, L’OCCITANE began as a passion project by founder Olivier Baussan, who distilled essential oils inspired by his deep connection to the land. While the brand has grown globally, its philosophy has remained constant: nature matters, and people matter. These principles are expressed through long-term, measurable commitments that shape how L’OCCITANE sources, produces, and operates.

KEY PILLARS OF L’OCCITANE’S ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL COMMITMENTS

Respecting Biodiversity

L’OCCITANE protects biodiversity through responsible sourcing and long-term conservation efforts. Ingredients are traceable and sustainably sourced to ensure cultivation and harvesting methods do not harm ecosystems. Dedicated supply chains help safeguard local plant species, while targeted initiatives include establishing the first organic immortelle plantation in Corsica, reviving almond tree cultivation in Provence, and actively protecting Provençal lavender, which is increasingly threatened by climate change.

These actions reflect a long-term commitment to preserving natural resources rather than short-term compliance.

Supporting Producers

L’OCCITANE’s products are rooted in long-standing relationships with producers built on trust, transparency, and respect. Producers work closely with the brand year after year under fair working conditions, with a shared responsibility for protecting the land and sustaining local communities.

As of 2025, L’OCCITANE achieved Fairtrade certification for 99% of producers of its iconic ingredients, by volume.

These practices ensure value is shared across the supply chain, from field to consumer.

Reducing Waste

L’OCCITANE reduces its environmental footprint by rethinking packaging design and retail practices. Efforts focus on lowering material use, improving recyclability, and expanding refill and in-store recycling solutions that encourage guests to return empty beauty containers.

2025 Achievements:

  • 61% of bottles contain recycled plastic
  • 58% of plastic packaging is recyclable or reusable
  • 85% of L’OCCITANE-owned stores offer a recycling service

Big Little Things Recycling Programme

As part of our commitment to the environment and circular beauty, the Big Little Things Recycling Programme invites guests to return empty beauty containers in-store. In return, guests are rewarded for their participation, encouraging more mindful recycling habits and giving packaging a second life.

A Long-term Commitment

L’OCCITANE’s ESG approach is not driven by one-off initiatives or seasonal campaigns. Its commitments are embedded into core business practices, supported by measurable progress and ongoing accountability. This reflects a belief that responsible beauty is built over time — through consistency, transparency, and respect for both people and the planet.
